Kevin Costner recently shared the heartfelt reasons behind casting his 15-year-old son, Hayes, in his latest film, "Horizon: An American Saga."

During an appearance on the June 17 episode of Today, the Yellowstone star spoke candidly about this decision.

"He's a beautiful boy," Costner said, referring to Hayes, who is one of his three children with ex-wife Christine Baumgartner. Costner and Baumgartner are also parents to Cayden, 17, and Grace, 14.

"And he's quiet," Costner added, highlighting one of the qualities he appreciates about Hayes.

Costner, 69, acknowledged that his decision to cast Hayes diverged from his usual principles regarding family and the entertainment industry. "I have not shoved my children into the business," he explained. "I realize there are so many young actors that would just kill to be in this movie and I don't want to take those parts away from them just ‘cause I can place my own children in. But in this instance, it was a smaller part. I selfishly wanted him with me for the two weeks he was with me.

As the director of the film, Costner cherished the moments he shared with his son during the production. "We would drive to the set every day and he would whisper," he reminisced. "He didn't have a lot of experience but he's really beautiful in the movie. It's a really complicated scene."

Costner's reflections offer a glimpse into the personal and professional dynamics at play in the making of "Horizon: An American Saga," emphasizing the special bond between father and son.
