At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, director Greta Gerwig shared her thoughts on the #MeToo movement in France, emphasizing its positive impact on the film industry.

During the jury press conference on the festival's opening day, Gerwig, known for her work on "Barbie," expressed optimism about the movement's influence.

"I think people in the community of movies telling us stories and trying to change things for the better is only good," she said, according to Variety.

Gerwig observed, "I have seen substantive change in the American film community, and I think it’s important that we continue to expand that conversation." She added, "So, I think it’s only moving everything in the correct direction. Keep those lines of communication open."

As the president of this year’s competition jury, Gerwig will play a pivotal role in awarding the prestigious Palme d’Or at the conclusion of the 11-day festival, which began on Tuesday night.

Reflecting on the broader implications of the #MeToo movement, Gerwig noted, "I can’t speak to the timelines with movements like this. It’s evolving all the time, it’s not something that’s a destination we all reach together. It’s something we keep discussing and figuring out how we want our industry in cinema to be."

One significant positive outcome of the #MeToo movement, according to Gerwig, has been the rise of intimacy coordinators in films.

"I think of it in the same way as a stunt coordinator or fight coordinator. It’s an art, it’s about building a safe environment," she explained.

At 40 years old, Gerwig continues to champion the evolution of the film industry, advocating for ongoing dialogue and safety in cinematic production.
