Broadway is set to dazzle this fall with a fresh, contemporary take on Shakespeare's timeless tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet," starring rising stars Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor.

Zegler, who captivated audiences as Maria in the 2021 film adaptation of "West Side Story," and Connor, celebrated for his heartfelt role in the hit series "Heartstopper," are poised to bring a modern twist to the classic tale.

Performances are scheduled to begin on September 26, with the official opening night set for October 24 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Announced on Wednesday, this new adaptation promises to explore themes of youthful alienation against a backdrop of adult violence.

The production will feature music by Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff, known for his collaborations with Taylor Swift, adding a unique contemporary edge to the classic play.

While specific details about the production's concept remain under wraps, marketing hints at a modern influence.

A promotional video showcases Zegler and Connor in trendy attire, dancing and flirting to a track by Antonoff's band, Bleachers, suggesting a dynamic and relatable interpretation of the iconic love story.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Sam Gold, acclaimed for his work on "Fun Home" as well as Broadway productions of "Macbeth" and "King Lear," this rendition is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Shakespeare's work. Gold is also directing this season's revival of "An Enemy of the People."

Produced by Seaview, co-founded by Greg Nobile and Jana Shea and partially owned by Sony Music Masterworks, this innovative revival is generating significant buzz.

Announced just last month, the production is already anticipated to be a standout in the upcoming Broadway season.
