Renowned Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh recently offered her perspective on the unexpected omissions of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie from the nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards, during an appearance on Today.

Speaking with host Hoda Kotb, Yeoh, who clinched the Best Actress award at the previous Oscars for her role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," delved into the topic of Gerwig and Robbie missing out on nominations for Best Director and Best Actress categories.

Expressing a nuanced view, Yeoh commented, "You know, joy and disappointment, it seems to go hand in hand." She emphasized the competitive nature of the industry, noting that there are limited nominations available, leading to tough decisions.

"The only take is like, it’s so competitive out there and there is no guarantee because you’re not the only voter, you know? It’s widespread," Yeoh added, highlighting the unpredictability of the nomination process.

While reflecting on the nominations, Yeoh acknowledged the recognition received by Gerwig's and Robbie's projects in other categories, such as Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for the Barbie movie. 

Despite this, she expressed empathy for their snubs in the major categories, considering the success and acclaim garnered by their respective films.

"Thank God the movie got nominated for Best Picture. But you do think, ‘How do you get nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director and not Best Actress?’" Yeoh pondered, underscoring the discrepancy.
