Austin Butler responds to criticism for referring to Vanessa Hudgens as 'Friend'

Austin Butler has addressed the online criticism he faced for referring to his former girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens as "a friend."

In a recent interview with Esquire, the Dune: Part Two actor explained why he chose not to mention Vanessa by name but rather referred to her as a friend in a previous media interaction.

"Yeah, I definitely learned a lesson from that," the 32-year-old remarked.

Austin explained, "I felt like I was respecting her privacy and not wanting to bring up things that would force her to discuss."

"I have a lot of love and respect for her. It wasn't about trying to diminish anything," added the Elvis actor.

Having dated Vanessa from 2011 to 2020, Austin emphasized that he highly values his own privacy and didn't want to compromise anyone else's.

Last month, the actor revealed that his former girlfriend played a pivotal role in inspiring him for his Oscar-nominated portrayal of Elvis during a Hollywood Reporter Actors Roundtable conversation in 2023.

"The month before I found out Baz [Luhrmann] was making the movie, I was driving around looking at Christmas lights with a friend, and there was an Elvis Christmas song playing on the radio. I was singing along, and my friend [referring to Vanessa] looked at me and said, 'You should play Elvis.' I thought, 'That's a long shot,'" recounted Austin.

"A couple of weeks later, I was playing the piano with the same friend there, and she said, 'I'm serious. You need to find a way to get the rights to a script.' Then my agent called and said, 'So Baz Luhrmann is making an Elvis film,'" he continued.
