Nicki Minaj Pays Tribute to Princess Diana During Birmingham Concert

The Queen of Rap, Nicki Minaj, paid tribute to Princess Diana during her Pink Friday 2 Tour stop in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on Sunday, May 26. 

The 41-year-old rapper led an impromptu moment of silence for the late Princess of Wales, who passed away in 1997.

During the concert at Resorts World Arena, Minaj interacted with fans, handing them her microphone to find out where they were from. In a fan-captured clip of the event, a fan mentioned they were from Wales. Minaj repeated, “Wales,” in a British accent.

“It always reminds me of a dear friend of mine,” she continued in the accent. “Well, she’s not here anymore, but the Princess of Wales.”

The crowd roared in response, and Minaj put her hands together and bowed her head, asking the audience to hold “a moment of silence for her.”

Though Minaj and Diana were never acquainted—the rapper was just 14 when the princess died—Minaj has expressed her admiration for the late royal. 

She was featured on Ice Spice’s popular song "Princess Diana," where both artists rap, “When we come out, it looks like Princess Diana on the street.”

The May 26 show followed an incident a day earlier in the Netherlands, where Minaj was briefly detained for allegedly “carrying drugs” while on her way to Manchester, England for a concert. She recorded and shared the interaction on social media, as reported by People.
